From c. 1994 to 1997 the American artist Bruce Nauman (b. 1941) made drawings and etchings on the theme of the hand. For the first time in his career, and now drawing from life, he focused on this motif. Being faced with the different activities of the left (model) and the right hand (drawing) he decided to reverse the roles, emancipating the left hand from a subordinate and supporting role, thus questioning the dominant authorship of the right hand. By making the physical conditions of the drawing process visible he also questioned the role of the artist as such.
Ausgangspunkt dieses Beitrags ist die Zeichnung All Thumbs (Holding Hands) des amerikanischen Künstlers Bruce Nauman (*1941) aus dem Jahre 1997, die sich in der Sammlung des Kupferstichkabinetts im Kunstmuseum Basel befindet [Abb. 1].
Sie ist aus einer Werkgruppe von graphischen Arbeiten aus der Mitte der 1990er-Jahre hervorgegangen, in der sich der Künstler erstmals intensiv mit dem Motiv der Hand auseinandergesetzt und nach der Natur gezeichnet hat.
Über die Rolle des Motivs hinaus scheinen ihn in dieser Zeit auch das Zeichnen an und für sich und die unterschiedlichen Rollen der rechten und der linken Hand beschäftigt zu haben.
