Überlegungen zum Ethos des Bildes nach Platon und Rancière

«We exist to inspire understanding of the world through quality photojournalism.» [1]

In reflections interspersed throughout his work Plato addresses the ethos of the image. Hereby he introduces questions such as how and what images are to represent and which effects they are to produce. In the famous tenth book of Politeia he regards images as delusional, as mere representations which are contrasted with the epistemological quality of a higher truth. However, in consideration of other dialogues it becomes evident that Plato’s perspective on the ethos of images is not as restrictive and simplifying as these passages might suggest. In patches Plato does reflect upon the very necessity of the relatedness of representations to a higher truth in order to gain the ability to differentiate between correct and incorrect representations. This epistemological distinction admits of the judgement whether representations are good or bad in an ethical sense. Focusing on the affiliation of epistemological and ethical content of representations Plato addresses questions that are still highly relevant in recent discussions about imaging, distribution, and censorship, especially in a mass medial context.
